ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) - Wednesday marked 8 years since Trayvon Martin was shot and killed---sparking The Humanize My Hoodie Movement.
This started in the aftermath of the shooting, and challenges stereotypes associated with people of color.
Wednesday night, the filmmakers of the documentary "Humanize My Hoodie" showcase their work at the Gray Duck Theater. It features themes of racism as well as resilience to defy the odds.
"They're going to be inspired but they're going to see us challenge white supremacy," said filmmaker Jason Sole. "When we see systems of oppression that harm black and indigenous people, we want to stand up against that. We used education but we also used our talents and our gifts."
The criminal justice professor at Hamline University teamed up with Iowa designer and activist Andre Wright for the project.
Sole wore a hoodie for the entirety of a 15-week class a social experiment which furthered the movement.
The resulting documentary focuses on the stories of two black men and how they made their way to the runway at the New York Fashion Show.
The two filmmakers hope to change attitudes about appearance and work to de-stigmatize nationalities, clothing trends, gender identification and more. READ MORE
